Pupil Premium

What is Pupil Premium?

The Pupil Premium Grant is a funding initiative provided to schools in England to help improve the educational outcomes of disadvantaged pupils. It aims to address the link between family income and academic achievement by giving schools additional resources to support all children who are in need of extra support. The grant is allocated based on the number of pupils eligible for free school meals, those in care, and children from military families.

Schools are expected to use the funds strategically to improve progress and close attainment gaps. The Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) emphasises that effective use of the Pupil Premium requires a well-thought-out strategy focusing on three main areas: high-quality teaching, targeted academic support, and wider strategies to remove non-academic barriers. Success depends on careful planning, implementation, and ongoing evaluation.
