Our PSHE Curriculum Intent
At Ashford St Mary’s CE Primary School, we believe that children’s mental health and well-being is an important part of their life in our school. We aim to encourage children to talk to a trusted adult about any worries they have in and out of school. We promote a positive atmosphere in our classrooms where encouragement and praise are at the forefront of all we do. Using our school Christian values as a basis for good life skills the children have the opportunity to express these values on a daily basis and to think about how these help others well-being around them as well fostering their own positive mental feelings. We aim to promote children’s knowledge, self-esteem, emotional wellbeing and resilience, and to help them to form and maintain worthwhile and positive relationships. Children will be taught to have respect for themselves, and for others, within our ever-changing society.
What do we want for our pupils?
- To develop a confidence in sharing their own thoughts and opinions with others
- To develop skills and awareness to keep themselves healthy and safe
- To develop positive views of themselves and others
- To develop an attitude of a responsible global citizen
- To understand and manage their emotions
- To show tolerance of others beliefs, religions and choices
- To build positive, respectful and safe relationships with other people now and in their future lives
- To know about their rights and responsibilities
- To have an understanding of the British Values
- To contribute to school life and the wider community
- To challenge stereotypes
How we implement the PSHE Curriculum
The PSHE curriculum in Years 1-6 is taught through the Coram life SCARF programme. SCARF provides the framework for a whole-school approach to improving children’s wellbeing and progress, based on five values:
- Safety
- Caring
- Achievement
- Resilience
- Friendship
SCARF provides a whole-school teaching framework centred on the ‘Growth Mindset’ approach – promoting positive behaviour, mental health, wellbeing, resilience and achievement. The five SCARF values are explored through videos, songs, games and practical activities. Discussion is used in every lesson and questions are tailored to their age group. SCARF provides a robust framework for promoting a positive ethos and values across the school community, and gives a strong foundation for children’s spiritual, moral and social education.
The three themes of: health and wellbeing, relationships and living in the wider world help encourage and develop children’s responsibility for their own actions; understanding and respecting the beliefs of others; learning how everyone in society is protected by the rule of law; and how everyone can make a positive contribution to our society through the democratic process.
Throughout the course of the year the PSHE curriculum is enhanced through participation in:
- Whole school well-being assemblies and workshop days
- Whole school enrichment activities e.g. Anti-Bullying Week, Children’s Mental Health Week
Impact of our PSHE Curriculum
Children will have developed self-discipline in their choices about how they can stay fit and healthy including wellbeing of the mind and how this will benefit them now and in their future lives. Using scenarios within their learning means that children can apply transferable skills, preparing them to meet unknown situations with confidence. Pupils at Ashford St Marys are enabled to develop the vocabulary, confidence and resilience to clearly articulate their thoughts and feelings within an environment that encourages openness, trust and respect and know when and how they can seek the support of others. They will apply their understanding of society to their everyday interactions, from the classroom and the school to the wider community they are part of. Pupils will be able to explain what they are focusing on to become better citizens in our school community and the world beyond.
Children’s learning and progress in PSHE will be monitored throughout their time at Ashford St Mary’s CE Primary School to ensure that progression through the year groups is evident and that all areas of learning are covered. By the time children leave Ashford St Mary’s Primary School, they will have gained the knowledge to move through secondary school and beyond with a positive attitude to learning and acquired the skills to adapt their ability and have the tools to equip themselves to tackle lifelong learning.
