We cannot emphasise enough how important it is that they get the opportunity to sit down at home and enjoy these stories with you. An enjoyment of reading and discussing stories is such an important foundation to lay.
As discussed at your home visits, the children will first bring home stories with no words in them. The idea is that they discuss the pictures with you. You can talk about what is happening, what they can see, how they think the characters may feel etc. Before they can do this, they may need you to model it first. We promise this stage in reading is really important – ‘early literacy floats on a sea of talk’. To be a confident reader you need to be a confident talker!
Below is a video of Miss Riggs sharing a story with Brylan, just to give you an idea! The discussion and the conversation is just as important as the story.
If you have any questions about this process, please ask us – there is no such thing as a silly question!
